When Is the Right Time to Hire a PR Firm?
June 8, 2026 · MyGoodPR
Two mistakes founders make with PR: hiring too early, when there is no story to tell, and waiting too long, while a competitor becomes the obvious choice. Here is how to know where you actually stand.
You are probably ready if...
- You have a real story, a point of view, or results worth talking about.
- Being better known would directly help your business: more clients, better talent, easier fundraising.
- You can commit to showing up. PR is a partnership, not a vending machine.
- You can sustain it for at least a few months. Earned media compounds, but it does not happen in week one.
You are probably not ready if...
- The product or service is not actually ready for more attention yet.
- You want a single hit and then silence. One placement fades fast. A consistent presence is what builds a reputation.
- You expect guaranteed outlets. No honest firm can promise a specific publication, because editors decide, not agencies.
The honest test
Ask yourself: if 167 million monthly podcast listeners, plus the readers of the outlets you would land, heard your story this quarter, would your business be ready to capitalize on it? (That podcast figure is real, by the way: Edison Research, Infinite Dial 2026.) If yes, waiting is just lost time. The best moment to start building a reputation was last year. The second best is now.
